Ok I’m 14 years old around 5’9 and 130 pounds. I’m deathly afraid to fly and I have horrible panic attacks. I’m flying to seattle from tn with multiple stops and when my dad bought the tickets I started crying my eyes out. Most people tell me to grow up and whatever but I really don’t want to make my parents stressed out while on the plane and I know I won’t be able to control myself. So my dad has a friend who is a dentist and my dad asked him if he would perscribe my dad xanax for me to take. I hate taking medicine in the first place so this tells you how seriously scared I am. The reason I didn’t go to a doctor is because we don’t have insurance and it costs a lot to go to a doctors office. I’m really scared to take this pill but I NEED SOMETHING TO HELP ME GET ON THE PLANE. My question is: how much should I take … And will I become addicted to it? I’m really scared and every time I think about the airplane I want to puke someone please help me..

Xanax is addictive, but just taking one to fly isn’t the road to addiction. Chances are, you won’t think much about it. They don’t really give you a buzz, they just take the edge off. I understand that the ineffectual part of your brain knows flying is perfectly safe, but the primitive fish-brain part is doing al the talking.
You need to concentrate on the intellectual part. Millions of people fly every day and nothing happens. Keep telling yourself the,t and eventually, the fish-brain will get the message. The Xanax will help you not dwell on the negative. Xanax is really good for situational anxiety. I was on Wellbutrin for a while, but I decided I didn’t want to be on drugs. I have some Xanax, and when I am in one of my trigger situations, I’ll pop one and it makes everything all better. I can function, drive, work, write, etc. I just find that I’m not bothered by the stressor. It will be fine.

The dentist should have prescribed a certain dosage for you. Xanax comes in 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2 and 4mg I think. Since you have never had it, just one 1/4 tab should take the edge off. Taking one pill will not get you addicted. You are correct to be concerned though, because Xanax is a type of benzo, and that type of drug is generally habit forming.
